Story #39: Survival

SURVIVAL
“Kyle you have got to keep up!” It’s 2014 and the the world is at its end. Steve Devor
was a well known and miraculous doctor, but one day he made a fatal mistake when
he attempted to come up with a cure for cancer by creating a virus to to fight against it.
This virus grievously failed and made half of the worlds population flatline in the first
week and to make things worse the dead came back and fed on the living. If the living
get scraped, bit, or they get the dead’s blood in their system, they turn.
Although three fourths of the worlds population is dead or living dead, there are
three survivors in Illinois struggling to survive day by day. These survivors are Johnny,
Kyle, and Jason. It was another day of fighting to survive and they were scavenging
food. “Jason how’s your end of work coming along?” shouted Johnny to the other end
of the store.
“Right on track,” Jason shouted back, “And you Kyle?.”
“Good,” Kyle answered “But we need to be leaving soon, we’ve been here too long.”
Soon after they hear a voice on a radio.
“ If anyone can hear me..we have a camp with supplies..we can provide shelter..If
there are any survivors please make your way to the helipad on shelby tower.. we can
pick you up there at 5 o’clock p.m. sharp.”
“Well it looks like the military has finally done something,” stated Jason. “Yeah, we
need to get on our way as soon as possible, grab what you can and lets go,” said
Johnny. After hours of walking they made it to Erie the city where shelby tower was
located. When they got high enough on a hill that overlooked the city they could see
everything.
Burning buildings and vehicles, bodies everywhere, and zombies covered the
streets. The smell that surrounded them was unbearable to the point all three of them
covered their noses with their shirts. “So how are we going to reach that tower? it’s
nearly a mile into the city and the city is overrun,” questioned Kyle. “I think I know a
way through the city that should be more safe than the rest of it,” said Johnny. It’s an
alley that not many people travel through, let alone know about, It’s kind of difficult to
get in even when your alive and with the ability of reasoning, and I doubt they have
reasoning anymore.”
They proceeded into the city attempting to be stealthy to avoid the zombies, not long
after they came in they luckily found the alley. “ Now be careful getting in, it’s hard but
we need to climb that big fence and hop down to the other side, I don’t think zombies
can climb so I don’t think any of them will be in the alley at least in the beginning,”
instructed Johnny. All three of they made it over they fence unnoticed as far as they
knew. As they were walking the alley Jason told them he would scope out the turn up
ahead and make sure that it’s safe for them. Johnny didn’t want him to but although he
was sort of the leader of the group, Jason didn’t listen and went ahead to check it out.
As Jason turned the corner a decent distance ahead of Kyle and Johnny, three
zombies came out of a dark area in the alley and grabbed him. Kyle and Johnny after a
couple minutes made it around the corner and they didn’t see Jason anywhere.
“JASON...JASON?” Johnny called, but there was no answer. They kept moving and
wished they would find Jason up ahead. They got their wish. They turned a second
corner and there he was with three zombies tearing him apart. Out of pure rage Kyle
and Johnny simultaneously screamed, “JASON!,” and mauled the zombies with all the
strength they had. After they finished and calmed down, they made the decision to
keep moving.
They kept walking and they could eventually see the entrance to Shelby tower and it
was nearing 5 o’clock. As they were going through the entrance they heard a
bloodcurdling scream. They whipped their heads in fear to see what could ever make
that sound. In their horror there was a group of zombies sprinting at them..sprinting!
Kyle and Johnny started stumbling up the steps to get to the helipad, and the zombies
were gaining on them. Up and up the stairs they ran with the zombies getting closer
with each step. One of the zombies let out another scream, Kyle and Johnny could
hear the rotor wings heading towards the helipad. They were so close and would be
there in seconds and out of nowhere Kyle tripped down the stairs and hurtled towards
the zombies yelling until they reached him and his yell died off.
Johnny made it to the top, slammed the door, and started waving his arms wildly so
the helicopter would spot him. It saw him and landed, he jumped in and told them to
leave fast due to the zombies breaking through the door to reach them. The helicopter
took off right before the zombies could reach them.
The pilot asked, “ Only one of you?” and Johnny replied, “Sadly..yes,” and they made
their way to sanctuary.
